In disc one of this 2-disc set, Steve explains hand and foot technique in ground-breaking detail and gets to the core of what drummers need to know in order to improve their feel and technical skills. In disc two, using examples by an all-star band, Steve explains the evolution of the drumset in U.S. Music -- how the drumset was first used in all the major styles of U.S. Music and how closely related all the styles are. Special features include xtensive bonus footage including alternate-take drum solos, a brilliant hi hat solo with a hi hat tutorial, alternate band takes, a camera-switching option, optional running commentary by Steve, a listening list, more. Features several live performances of Dave with his bands, and if you didn't think Dave was The Man before, you will when you see this. Camera work and production is top notch. I find it very frustrating that Dave really only gives a few lessons, and they are extremely basic. He doesn't break apart what he's playing in the songs. The DVD is probably worth having just for the performances, but as far as learning to play like Dave... his ideas go by VERY fast. The next title "How to Develop Technique" shows plenty of exercises to play free and effortless. UTTAD is kinda of an Instructional Video, But isn't, Carter will break down some of DMB's More Popular songs, Like #41,and he will demonstrate the Licks and so on,but there is actually no explanation on Figuring out and counting the different Time Signatures he uses. He does talk about his history a bit with like maybe two different old school Video footage of a Fusion group he was in called "Secrets", and he does go over a lick called the "Timpani Crossover". He talks about his set up, His odd drumming ability (he plays open handed but can also play the traditional "cross over" way leading with his right hand.)as far as going In-depth about certain things he does very little,Which Most likely means it isn't intended for Beginners. He does play alot of DMB's songs to the CD track itself, and that's when your Jaw Drops and you are left saying "Wow". For some good Demonstrations on what he plays in some of the Songs this is a great video, As far as actually learning how to figure out time Sig's and so on ,this wouldn't be the video. But don't get me wrong,Now that i have progressed as a drummer and learned all that stuff myself, this Video Makes Perfect sense,But i wouldn't tell the Beginners NOT to buy it, cause you should,to get ideas in your own playing, and even Hype you up before a rehearsal. Here is a "Track" breakdown on the songs he actually plays through all the way with the CD.
